Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at backyardboysbaseball@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Our league is open to boys and girls ages 7–12 from Southern Maine. Players of all experience levels are welcome — from first‑timers to seasoned Little Leaguers.

Skill development, trying new positions, sportsmanship, teamwork, fun over winning.

The season runs from late June through early August, with games scheduled on weeknights and practices scheduled at the coach’s discretion.

Notify Greg and/or Dan that your town would like to participate and let us know how many teams per age group. BYB will then create teams within PlayMetrics and provide a link for the invitee to distribute to its players. Invitees must register with BYB no later than 14 days prior to the start of the season to allow for scheduling and uniform ordering.

One week before the start of the season.

We will gather uniform sizes through the registration process. Towns can either order their own uniforms, or we can order in bulk, whatever each town prefers.

We expect to have leagues for 8U, 10U and 12U. Children ages 7-8 are eligible for 8U, children ages 9-10 are eligible for 10U and children 11-12 are eligible for 12U. League age is based on the Little League Age chart, which can be found here: littleleague.org/downloads/2026-baseball-age-chart/

We recommend 11-14. Allow enough players to account for summer vacations, but limit so that all players get sufficient playing time.

Teams usually play 2 games per week (8 total games), plus a beginning and end‑of‑season tournament.

No. Backyard Boys is open to all.

Yes. We would like to be as competitively balanced as possible, but kids playing with their friends and siblings is part of the draw of the summer league.

Teams are responsible for providing their own equipment, including balls, helmets, bats and catching gear. Towns or BYB will provide team jerseys and hats to players in all divisions, with the cost of these items included in the registration fee.  Players are responsible for providing their own pants, socks, and belts, in the color designated by their Manager, as well as personal equipment such as bats, helmets, gloves, cleats and equipment bags.

We are still finalizing the budget to ensure we charge enough to cover costs.  We are not looking to make a profit, just cover the cost of uniforms, umpires, special events, insurance, background checks, etc.

No. For legal and insurance reasons, Backyard Boys is an independent non-profit entity with its own charter and insurance. However, practically speaking, Backyard Boys is closely aligned with local little leagues across Southern Maine.

We follow standard 46/60 youth baseball rules, with modifications to keep games fast, safe, and fun. Rules per age group are posted here: Playing Rules

Generally, no, each invitee shall provide access to a local field to host at least one home game per week, on average. If a city or town is unable to provide a local field, an exception may be granted with approval from the Board.

All teams are led by volunteer coaches. We welcome new coaches — no experience required, just enthusiasm and patience.

Teams typically practice once per week, but the practice schedule is at the discretion of the Manager.

Players can play “up” a league, but not “down” a league. So, if you have a 10- and 12-year-old, both could play on the same 12U team.

We intend to close the season with a fun, competitive tournament.

Yes. Umpires are scheduled by the home team.

About Us

History

Backyard Boys Baseball League began in 2006 in Scarborough, Maine as Kid’s Travel Baseball, founded on the belief that the game can teach life lessons, strengthen teamwork, and support both physical and mental growth. In 2025, leadership passed to President Greg Clemons and Vice President Dan Kuzmitski, who share a deep commitment to honoring the league’s roots while guiding it into the future. Today, Backyard Boys Baseball League, based in York Maine, continues to offer young athletes a place to grow — as players, teammates, and people.
